Kim Yu-na Inducted into S. Korea's Sports Hall of Fame

Former Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na has been inducted into South Korea's sports Hall of Fame.

The Korean Sport and Olympic Committee held its annual induction ceremony in Seoul on Wednesday, awarding the honor to the country’s figure skating icon.

The committee’s Hall of Fame has selected sports heroes since 2011, in recognition of their contribution to promoting the country with their athletic achievements.

So far, eight athletes have been inducted, including former wrestler Yang Jung-mo and the late Sohn Ki-jung, who won the marathon event at the 11th Summer Olympics in 1936, during the Japanese colonial era.

Kim is the first Winter sports athlete and the youngest among Hall of Fame inductees.

Last year, she was one of 12 final candidates for the honor and received an overwhelming amount of support with 82-point-three percent in a related online vote, but was not awarded due to the committee’s rule that candidates for sports heroes should be 50 years or older.

The rule was abolished this year due to public criticism.
