Researchers Map Genome Sequence of S. Koreans

Researchers at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology(UNIST) published the genome sequencing of South Koreans in the journal Nature Communications on Thursday.

The blueprint titled Korean Reference, or KOREF, assembled the genome reference of 41 South Koreans residing around the nation.

UNIST said it is the first time in the world that researchers have constructed a genome reference representing a specific population.

UNIST said the Human Genome Project succeeded in mapping the genes of human beings in 2003. However, it was mostly based on Caucasian ancestry and lacked characteristics specific to other races.

The institute said KOREF will accelerate the research for diseases and mutations specific to each race.

UNIST researchers plan to map the genome sequence of up to ten-thousand South Koreans in order to improve the accuracy of KOREF.
