A painting by the late South Korean artist Kim Whan-ki has been sold at the highest price ever paid for a Korean work of art.

At Seoul Auction's 20th Hong Kong Sale at the Hong Kong Grand Hyatt on Sunday, Kim's oil painting entitled "12-V-70 #172” was sold for 41-point-five million Hong Kong dollars, or six-billion-326-point-26 million Korean won.

It beat the previous record of the most expensive Korean work of art also set by another painting of his named “27-VII-72 #228.” It was sold for five-point-four billion won at the K Auction held in Seoul in June.

The recently sold painting, drawn on a canvas more than two meters high, was painted in New York in 1970.
