67% of Public Oppose State-authored History Textbooks

A new Gallup Korea poll indicates 67 percent of South Koreans oppose the government's plan to introduce new state-authored history textbooks into school lesson plans.

Gallup surveyed more than one-thousand adults nationwide between Tuesday and Thursday.

Only 17 percent of respondents supported the new textbooks, while 15 percent offered no opinion.

Opposition to the history texts prevailed in most demographics --- but among supporters of the ruling Saenuri Party, 51 percent were for the books versus 18 percent against.

Sixty-eight percent of those surveyed were aware that a draft version of the state-authored books was unveiled Monday.

Seventy-one percent of that subgroup said the writing was inadequate, while eleven percent viewed the content as appropriate.
