KBS drama “The Descendants of the Sun” has garnered the top honor at this year's Asian Television Awards.
The network said on Saturday that the drama was named Best Drama Series during the ATA ceremony, which was held at the Suntec Convention Center in Singapore on Friday.
The 16-episode drama features a romance between a Special Warfare Command lieutenant, played by Song Joong-ki, in the fictional war-torn country of Uruk and a doctor, played by Song Hye-kyo, heading a volunteer medical team.
The hit series recorded a nationwide viewer rating of 38-point-eight percent, becoming the first South Korean miniseries surpassing 30 percent in viewer ratings since MBC’s “The Moon that Embraces the Sun” in 2012.
It drew much attention of drama lovers not only in South Korea but also in other countries, including China.
Launched in 1996, the annual Asian Television Awards is hosted by Singapore. It is watched by some 300 million people around the world. This year, it doled out a total of 41 top awards.
