Statue of Korean Marathoner Sohn Ki-jung Erected in Berlin

The Korean Culture Center in Germany has unveiled a statue of Korean runner Sohn Ki-jung near the site where he won the Berlin Olympic marathon in 1936.

Sohn ran in a Japanese uniform at the time because Korea was under occupation, but the statue updates his uniform to show a Korean flag.

The statue sat in storage at the South Korean Embassy in Germany for ten years while authorities sorted out where it could be permanently installed.

This is the 80th anniversary of Sohn's victory, and the foundation named after him says it will petition the International Olympic Committee(IOC) to correct his recorded name and nationality from Japanese to Korean.

Sohn won the gold medal with a time of two hours, 29 minutes and 19-point-two seconds. He died in 2002.
