A 28-member group of ruling and opposition lawmakers on Saturday submitted a resolution to the National Assembly objecting to an early relocation of U.S. troop units near the border with North Korea.

The resolution, initiated by Jeong Jang-seon, a lawmaker of the ruling Millenium Democratic Party (MDP), set out the undesirability of seeking the move of the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division while tensions over the North Korean nuclear issue continue to flare.

The lawmakers added they were opposed to the repositioning of the troops until the establishment of a peace mechanism on the Korean Peninsula.

They cited as reasons the heightened risk of a war stemming from Pyongyang's standoff with the United States over its nuclear weapons program and opposition by residents in the regions to which the troops are to be relocated.
