Figure Skater Scores Above 80 in Milestone Achievement

Figure skater Cha Jun-hwan has won a score above 80 points at a domestic tournament. The 80 point mark has been unattainable by any male South Korean figure skater until now.

During the men's single short program at the 71st National Figure Skating Championship held in Gangneung, Gangwon Province Saturday, the 15 year old scored 45-point-14 in the technical score(TES) and 36-point-69 in the program components score(PCS) for a total of 81-point-83. He was well ahead of second place Kim Jin-seo who scored 77-point-25 points.

Cha exceeded his previous short program record of 79-point-34 as well as the elusive 80 point milestone.

No South Korean figure skater has received a score higher than 80 points ever in a short program.

The Gangneung Ice Arena where the championship was held is the official venue for short track and figure skating events for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

It's the first time a figure skating competition was held at the newly built ice arena.
