Woodblocks of Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon Restored

Woodblocks used for the printing of the Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon have been restored and put on display for the public in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province.

A book of the Haeryebon, a commentary on Huminjeongeum, the Korean alphabet hangeul, was discovered in Andong in 1940. Designated as National Treasure No. 70, the relic is now kept at the Kansong Art Museum in Seoul.

The project to restore the 20 woodblocks was launched by Andong’s city government in May last year to celebrate the 570th anniversary of the promulgation of the Hunminjeongeum.

Based on the Haeryebon book, 30 experts finalized the shape of the woodblocks, which were then restored by the nation’s top four carvers.

The woodblocks will be put on display in a special exhibition at the Andong Folk Muesum until February 24th.
