South Korea’s skating athlete Kim Hyun-yung has brought home South Korea’s second speed skating gold medal at the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
In the women’s 500-meter speed skating final held on Thursday, Kim logged a combined 77-point-83 seconds from two races, pushing aside runner-up Arisa Tsujimoto of Japan by 69-hundredths of a second. Aleksandra Kachurkina of Russia came in third with 78-point-71 seconds.
Kim has already secured a spot to represent South Korea during the Sapporo Asian Games slated for later this month after finishing as runner-up in nationals in December. She came in 24th in the women’s 500-meter event of the Sochi Olympics in 2014.
Kim’s gold medal is the second gold for South Korea at the Universiade, following Cha Min-kyu’s victory in the men’s 500-meter speed skating event on Wednesday.
With two golds and a bronze, South Korea is placed at seventh in the medal standings.
