Seoul to Build Memorial Hall to Remember Provisional Government

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to build a memorial hall to commemorate South Korea's provisional government during Japan's colonial rule.

The Seoul city government unveiled the plan Wednesday in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the March first independence movement in 2019.

The city government will pool sites around the area, such as the Independence Gate and Seodaemun Prison, to establish a historic area.

The city government said it is impossible to prepare for the future without having a correct perception of history and that the memorial hall will allow visitors to experience history in their everyday lives.

The memorial hall will be established at the site of the Seodaemun District Council in western Seoul. It will be four stories high with one floor underground and have a total space of around five- to six-thousand square meters. The city hasn't decided whether it will renovate an existing building at the site or demolish it and build one anew.
