Japan's Kyodo News said Friday that the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee has declined its Japanese counterpart's request to change the Dokdo labeling on a map of the official Web site for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
In a response to the Japanese Olympic Committee, the Korean committee is reported to have said that the labeling is reasonable and logical for the East Sea islets.
In letters sent to the International Olympic Committee and the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee last month, the JOC requested to revise the page in question on the PyeongChang Games' Web site.
The Japanese committee is known to have said that including an unnecessary political message on the Games' Web site violates the Olympic Charter.
Tokyo's Foreign Ministry also called on the Seoul government to take steps over Dokdo being labeled as South Korean territory on maps posted on the Pyeongchang Games' Web site.
At the time, the organizing committee of the Winter Olympics blasted Japan's demand as not even worthy of response and stressed that Dokdo belongs to Korea.
Kyodo News said that the maps on the Web site have been renewed since this incident but the names Dokdo and East Sea remain the same. Ulleung Island situated between Dokdo and the Korean mainland has been additionally marked on the maps.
