The National Statistical Office (NSO) said Thursday South Korea's birthrate is falling off sharply in a trend indicative of its aging society.

In a report to mark United Nations World Population Day, the statistical office said the total fertility rate (TFR) for Korean women plummeted from 4.53 children in 1970 to an estimated 1.17 as of last year. The decrease was more acute than in other countries with similar levels of development and income.
