Naver Set to Begin Testing Self-driving Cars

South Korean tech giant Naver is set to begin testing its self-driving cars on public roads having secured related approval from the government.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on Monday said that it has issued a license for the driving test of a self-driving car developed by Naver Labs, the research and development arm of Naver.

The Naver Labs' vehicle was the 13th autonomous vehicle to have obtained a license plate since the ministry introduced a temporary license system for self-driving cars under development in February last year.

The ministry is working to establish law and infrastructure with the goal of commercializing level 3 self-driving cars by 2020.

A level 3 self-driving car refers to an autonomous car that requires a driver present to take over when necessary, although it can fully assume control of all safety-critical functions in certain conditions.
