Hopping Mammal Fossils Found in S. Korea

Korean scientists have found fossils of small mammals that hopped on two feet like kangaroos from 66 million to 145 million years ago

The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage said Tuesday that it found nine pairs of fossilized hind footprints in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province.

The fossils have been named Koreasaltipes Jinjuensis. It is the first time that mammal fossils from the Cretaceous period have been found on the Korean Peninsula.

Only two types of hopping mammal fossils have been found to date, the Ameghinichnus from the Jurassic period found in Argentina and the Musaltipes from the Miocene Epoch found in the United States.
