Film Director Wins KBS Global Korean Award

The Korean Broadcasting System(KBS) has recognized film director Park Soo-nam and four other Koreans living overseas with its annual award honoring their contributions to humanity.
 
The public broadcaster on Tuesday bestowed the 19th KBS Global Korean Award to five people. 

Park was honored for her films raising issues concerning Korean history, including “The Silence” about Korean victims of Japan’s wartime sex slavery.
 
While living in Japan, Park also directed “Song of Arirang: Voices from Okinawa,” and “The Other Hiroshima: Korean A-bomb Victims Tell Their Story.”
 
Park Kyong-man, a former vice president of the U.S. firm Kavlico Corp, also received the award for his contribution in reducing tail gas emissions.
 
The other winners include the founder of Lee&Yum Foundation and the head of the Germany-based world martial arts federation. 

Each awardee will receive prize money of 30 million won. KBS will also produce a documentary on their lives and achievements and broadcast it on Saturday.
 
Created in 1992, the KBS Global Korean Award is given to ethnic Koreans living overseas who have made a distinguished contribution to promoting the culture and welfare of mankind.
