First Korean Settlement in US to Be Recognized

A ceremony to recognize the first Korean settlement in the U.S. will be held in the Californian city of Riverside next week.

A signboard will be hung to commemorate the Pachappa Camp, the first voluntarily created Korean neighborhood in the U.S. established in 1905 by independent activist Ahn Chang-ho.

The ceremony follows the decision by the city council of Riverside to designate the camp as the “City Point of Cultural Interest.”

The camp, which was home to the Korean American community between 1905 and 1918, also served as an overseas hub of Korea’s independent movement against Japan’s colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.
