A district court has temporarily banned a local high school from using a state-authored history textbook.
The Daegu District Court on Friday granted an injunction against the textbook filed by two parents who accused Munmyeong High School of violating rules in the process of adopting the controversial textbook.
The court said it is uncertain whether the textbooks will be formally introduced as the National Assembly is discussing whether to abolish them, and if students study with the textbook for their college entrance exams, they will face irreversible damage.
The Education Ministry had planned to introduce the textbooks nationwide this year, but faced with growing resistance, instead allowed schools to choose between state-authored and private publishers’ books starting in March next year.
The ministry also sought schools to volunteer to adopt the state-authored books this year on a pilot basis. Munmyeong High School in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province applied for the use of the textbook, making it the only school in the nation designated to adopt the book.
Earlier this month, the parents filed an administrative suit against the provincial Office of Education, seeking to overturn the designation. At the same time, they also filed an injunction to suspend the textbook adoption pending the court's ruling.
