NHL superstars will not participate in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.
The Associated Press reported Monday that the National Hockey League(NHL) announced the decision, calling the matter officially closed.
The league of U.S. and Canadian ice hockey clubs said that no meaningful dialogue has materialized in negotiations among the National Hockey League Players’ Association, the International Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation.
NHL players’ absence will likely have considerable negative effects on ticket sales and game quality of ice hockey, one of the most popular events at winter Olympic Games.
The NHL has participated in five consecutive Winter Olympic Games since 1998. But club owners are opposed to disrupting the season for three weeks every four years, despite NHL players’ strong desire to play in winter Olympic Games.
