Gov't Tackle Investment Pact with U.S., Screen Quota Separately

Written: 2003-07-16 00:00:00Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

The government is considering a plan to separate a bilateral investment treaty with the United States from the controversial screen quota system.

On a local radio program Wednesday, Vice Finance and Economy Minister Kim Gwang-rim said relevant government ministries will consider whether it is possible to take a separate approach to the two issues.

The United States wants South Korea to abolish or drastically cut the quota, citing it as an obstacle to signing a bilateral investment treaty.

Under the screen quota system, local theaters are required to show Korean movies for a minimum of 106 days a year to protect the Korean film industry.
