Earth-mass Planet Discovered Using Korea Microlensing Telescope Network

A team of local scientists says it has succeeded in discovering an Earth-mass planet.

The team from the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute made the latest discovery by using Spitzer and ground-based Korea Microlensing Telescope Network observations.

The Korea Microlensing Telescope Network consists of three wide-field optical telescopes which have been installed in Chile, South Africa and Australia.

The planet has a mass that is one-point-43 times larger than that of Earth and is located 13-thousand light-years away. It is likely to be an ice planet given that its primary star is smaller than the sun and its temperature is low.

The results of the team’s latest research were published in the an edition of the global journal, the Astrophysical Journal Letters published on Wednesday.
