Local Scientists Develop Smart Contact Lens Sensor that Detects Diabetes, Glaucoma

A team of local scientists says it has developed a smart contact lens sensor that is capable of detecting diabetes and glaucoma.

The team led by Professor Park Jang-ung at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology unveiled their latest feat in the scientific journal Nature Communications on Thursday.

The team said it developed transparent, stretchable and multifunctional sensors on wearable soft contact lenses for wireless detection of glucose and intraocular pressure with high sensitivity.

The team said the sensor's key components are graphene and metal nanowires.

The team said the sensor not only monitors disease-related biomarkers but also evaluates ocular and overall health conditions of the human body.
