The South Korean and U.S. militaries said Monday the two sides will hold an annual joint military drill in August.

The Aug. 18-29 exercise, dubbed Ulji Focus Lens, comes amid deepening tension over the North's nuclear weapons program.

Pyongyang has angrily condemned past joint exercises as a rehearsal for an invasion of the North.

The upcoming drill is a simulated war game designed to test military cooperation between the militaries of the two allies in case of emergency.
