S. Korea's PIMS Approved as Formal Int'l Standard

South Korea’s Personal Information Management System(PIMS) has been approved as an international standard.

The Korea Communications Commission and the Korea Internet and Security Agency announced on Friday that the South Korean personal information management system was approved as a formal international standard by the International Organization for Standardization, the International Electrotechnical Commission Joint Technical Committee and the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector.

In line with the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, the system reviews whether a company or public institution is equipped with a system that safely protects the entire process of collecting, using, providing and destroying customers’ personal information before certifying.

The Korea Communications Commission and the Ministry of the Interior handle related policies while the Korea Internet and Security Agency manages the system.

As of last month, a total of 65 companies and public agencies acquired the PIMS certification.
