The foreign ministry said officials from 16 Asian countries, including China, Japan and Indonesia, opened a four-day meeting Tuesday to discuss joint measures against maritime piracy in the region.

In a news release, the ministry said the meeting in the southern Korean port city of Busan drew 50 foreign policy and maritime law enforcement officials.

Participants will discuss formulating a treaty aimed at increasing cooperation in the region to prevent and crack down on sea-borne piracy.
