S. Korea Succeeds in Testing Underwater Wireless Communication up to 30km Range

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries says it has succeeded in testing underwater wireless communication from a distance of up to 30 kilometers away.

The ministry announced on Monday that it succeeded in a two-way communication test in a 30-kilometer range carried out 100 meters underwater.

Between April 29th and May third, a research team installed modems at locations 30 kilometers apart at a depth of 100 meters in waters northeast of Jeju Island. The team measured the transmission and reception of digital data using sound waves.

Since 2012, the ministry has been seeking to secure underwater wireless communication technology, which will be used in developing marine resources and building a maritime defense system.
