Gov't to Set up Public-Private Council to Counter Ransomware Attacks

Government officials and the private sector will form a joint council to cope with possible additional WannaCry ransomware cyberattacks.

As the first step to set up the council, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning held a meeting on Tuesday, with related state agencies and businesses, including the Korea Internet and Security Agency, Chungnam National University, KT, Samsung Electronics and security software provider AhnLab.

In the meeting, the head of the ministry’s Cyber Security Policy Bureau called for enhanced cooperation between the government and the private sector to counter new worms, viruses and ransomware attacks.

An official from Microsoft Korea said that the firm is working to identify weaknesses of Microsoft’s operating system Windows and pledged continued investment in security.

Officials from the telecom provider and cyber security and vaccine firms agreed on the need to share information among related organizations to effectively block and counter worms and viruses.
