S. Korean Researchers Find Simple Way to Treat Anemia following Gastrectomy

South Korean researchers have found a simple and effective way to treat anemia associated with cancer treatment.

Professor Kim Young-woo and other researchers at the National Cancer Center Graduate School of Cancer Science and Policy said on Wednesday that they conducted a joint study with surgeons at seven domestic hospitals and found intravenous ferric carboxymaltose is effective in treating patients with acute anemia following gastrectomy.

Anemia is one of the most common and dangerous side effects of gastric cancer surgery.

It has a great influence on patients’ recovery but there are only few treatments such as blood transfusions, iron supplements or natural recovery. However, none of these methods are effective in treating anemia following gastrectomy.

The Korean researchers' findings appeared on the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA).
