Closeness to Moon to Raise Sea Level, Wider Tidal Range

The moon will come closest to the Earth on Friday, causing unusually high sea levels on South Korea’s southern and western coasts.

The Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency on Thursday cautioned about the high sea level and the wider tidal gap.

Sea levels will rise in Jeju Island and coastal Busan and Masan areas on Friday and possibly cause inundations in low-lying areas.

There are concerns about the sea levels on the western coast during the weekend.

Tourists visiting the western coastal areas of Incheon and Pyeongtaek are advised to exercise caution as the tidal difference is expected to reach up to nine-point-seven meters. Wider tidal gaps cause mud flats to appear larger.
