S. Korea, U.S. Resume Talks on New U.S. Military role in Korea

Military officials of South Korea and the United States will open a two-day meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii Wednesday aimed at resolving differences over the role of U.S. troops stationed in South Korea.

Analysts say the "Future of the Alliance Policy Initiative" meeting, the third this year, is unlikely to produce a clear breakthrough, because both sides remain far apart on specifics.

The focus of the meeting is to coordinate what specific role the 37,000 U.S. troops currently stationed in South Korea should play.

The half-century South Korea-U.S. military alliance was strained last year amid a wave of anti-American sentiments touched off by the acquittals of two U.S. soldiers charged in a traffic accident that killed two Korean schoolgirls.
