Local Researchers Develop Early Dementia Prediction Software

A group of local scientists have developed a new method to predict individual susceptibility to dementia.

The National Research Center for Dementia at Chosun University unveiled on Monday that it completed the brain map of an average Korean after analyzing the magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) of one-thousand-44 men and women aged 65 or older.

Using a newly developed prediction software, researchers will compare the MRIs of individual brains with the map for dementia prediction.

The university said that dementia patients display shrinking or deformation of their temporal lobe, which processes hearing, and hippocampus, which is associated with memory.

The agency plans to supply the early diagnosis technology to five major hospitals in the nation and operate it on a trial basis while also seeking patents for related technology and exporting dementia diagnosis technology.
