England defeated Venezuela 1-0 to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup in a dramatic final on Sunday.

At the match held at the Suwon World Cup Stadium, forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the winner in the first half, handing the European side its first ever title in the biennial football event.

The South American team’s hopes for an equalizer were dashed when forward Adalberto Penaranda’s penalty kick in the 72nd minute was saved by English goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

It was a tense match, as both sides also hit the woodwork. Venezuela’s Ronaldo Lucena hit the post with a long-range free-kick in the first-half, while England’s Josh Onomah saw a powerful strike hit the underside of the bar after the break.

England’s previous best finish in the U-20 World Cup was third place in 1993.

Host South Korea crashed out of the round of 16 with a 3-1 loss to Portugal.

In the group stage, Korea secured a spot in the round of 16 early on by winning their first two matches, a 3-0 win over Guinea and a 2-1 win over Argentina, before losing to England 1-0.
