High Sea Levels Expected along with Supermoon

The Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency says that unusually high sea levels and tides are expected for South Korea later this week and early next week, as the so-called supermoon shines over Earth.

A supermoon refers to a phenomenon when the moon is closest to Earth and appears larger and brighter, generating powerful gravitational forces. As a result, sea levels and tides will rise, posing a greater possibility of flooding in low-lying coastal areas.

The agency predicted that sea levels will rise by up to ten centimeters in South Korean waters during the supermoon on Friday.

Figures are expected to reach 957 centimeters off Incheon with a tidal difference of over seven meters on the west and east coast.

Supermoons are predicted to be observed on June 23rd and December fourth, following two earlier appearances in late April and May.
