Gov't to Quicken Earthquake Warnings

The government plans to alert the public against earthquakes more quickly in case a tremor of magnitude three or higher hits the country.

The Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) said on Monday that beginning next month, it will issue a warning within 15 to 25 seconds after a magnitude five or stronger earthquake is detected, quickening its alert system by 25 seconds or more from the current response measure.

As for small earthquakes with the magnitude of between three-point-five and five, a warning will be issued within 60 to 100 seconds after detection.

Along with the warnings, the KMA said it will also provide provisional data like location of the epicenter, with more detailed information to become available within five minutes after the quake.
