The Korea Football Association(KFA) on Tuesday appointed Shin Tae-yong as the new coach of the national football team.
Shin led South Korea’s Olympic football team in last year’s Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and the nation’s U-20 team.
The association convened a meeting of its technical committee in Paju and decided to have Shin fill the top coach post which was left vacant after the association dismissed the previous national team coach, Uli Stielike, for Team Korea’s poor performance in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The technical committee's chief, Kim Ho-kon, said that the term of the contract with Shin is until the finals of the 2018 World Cup. Kim said Shin will lead the team even if Team Korea ranks third in Group A after competing in two more qualifying rounds.
Shin led Team Korea to the quarterfinals of the Rio Olympics and the U-20 team to the round of 16 of the FIFA U-20 World Cup that ended last month.
