New Study: Women Who Drink Lightly Less Likely to Suffer Osteoporosis

A new study finds that women who drink lightly two or three times a week have less risk of developing osteoporosis than women who don’t drink alcohol at all.

A joint team made up of researchers from Soonchunhyang University Hospital and the Korea University Ansan Hospital said Friday that it made the latest assessment after analyzing the correlation between drinking habits and bone mineral density(BMD) of three-thousand-312 postmenopausal women.

Previously, the widely-accepted notion was that drinking should be avoided to prevent getting osteoporosis.

The latest research results showed that women who drank one or two glasses of soju or beer a week had the highest BMD levels. However, women who drank more than that were found to have seen a sharp decline in their bone density.

The research team said that women who drink lightly had the tendency to exercise regularly and thus such habit is likely what helped prevent osteoporosis.

The research results were published in the latest edition of the international journal, Plos One.
