Heavy Rain Pounds Chungcheong, Gyeongsang

Heavy rain is pounding Chungcheong and North Gyeongsang Province on Sunday, with heavy rain warnings issued for parts of the provinces.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said that Cheongju City in North Chungcheong Province was hit by 290 millimeters of torrential rain as of 11 a.m. Sunday.

With over 90 millimeters of rain per hour soaking the city, a flood warning was issued for Miho Stream, and parts of several other streams are about to flood. The city asked local residents in the flooding areas to evacuate in a text message.

Mungyeong and Sangju cities in North Gyeongsang Province also received more than 100 millimeters of rain.

The weather agency forecast up to 50 millimeters of rain per hour for North Chungcheong and North Gyeongsang provinces on Sunday afternoon. The weather is expected to let up from late Sunday afternoon.
