PM Promises Greater Efforts to Promote Hangeul Overseas

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon has promised that the government will make greater efforts to further promote the Korean language and the Korean writing system, Hangeul, overseas.

Lee delivered the promise in a congratulatory speech at this year’s international conference of educators teaching Korean across the world, which was held in Seoul on Tuesday.

The prime minister expressed appreciation for the passionate work of educators teaching Korean overseas, noting that the number of Korean speakers is the 13th largest in the world amid fervent international interest in the language.

Co-hosted by the ministries of foreign affairs, education and culture, the conference was attended by roughly 210 Korean language teachers and Korean school faculty members from dozens of countries and about 150 officials from King Sejong institutes, the nation’s education facilities to teach Korean abroad.
