Study Finds Sleep Disorder Increases Risk of Alzheimer's Disease

A common sleeping disorder called sleep apnea has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

A research team led by Professor Yoon Chang-ho at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital said on Wednesday that they found the link after a PET scan study on 19 patients with sleep apnea and 19 healthy people aged between 50 and 65.

The researchers said that the patients with the sleep disorder showed an increase in “amyloid beta” a brain protein associated with Alzheimer’s disease, in their right temporal lobes, which are often linked to the disease.

Their findings were published in the latest edition of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
