The Education Ministry and the Academy of Korean Studies announced on Friday that the next edition of the world history textbook titled, “Ways of the World,” being used in U.S. high schools will include two pages about South Korea.
The book, which will come out next year, is being created by a subsidiary company of MacMillan Publishers, one of U.S.’ top four textbook publishing companies.
The new book will include contents about contemporary South Korean politics and economic development as well as details about South Korea’s creative culture. Previously, U.S. world history textbooks had only touched briefly on the Korean War when it came to South Korea.
Kang Hae-young, a researcher at the Education Ministry, said the inclusion of the new content resulted from three years of continuous endeavors by the ministry on bringing about changes in U.S. textbooks. Kang expressed hope that the new book will help American students properly understand South Korea.
