Baobab Tree Becomes First to Flower in S. Korea

A baobab tree put on display in South Chungcheong Province has become the first in the nation to have produced a flower.

The National Institute of Ecology in Seocheon, South Chungcheong Province announced on Tuesday that it first spotted five flower buds on a baobab tree that is being exhibited at its Ecorium earlier on July 17th. The institute said that it confirmed later on July 22nd that one of the buds had bloomed.

Usually, it takes more than 20 years for a baobab tree to produce a flower. The baobab tree’s white flower blooms around sunset.

The Korea National Arboretum in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province and the Yeomiji Botanical Garden on Jeju Island also have baobab trees on display, but none of them have bloomed.
