19th Century Copy of Korea Map Found with Dokdo Islets

A colored copy of a historic map of Korea showing the Dokdo islets has been found in Japan, more proof of Korea's historical ownership of the easternmost territory.

Professor Nam Kwon-hee at Kyungpook National University announced Wednesday the findings by a team of Korean and Japanese scholars after studying a 22 piece Daedongyeojido map booklet owned by a Japanese collector.

They found it showed a small island on the right side of Ulleung Island in the East Sea.

Nam said that the copy is believed to have been produced between 1864 and 1889.

Known as the most precise Korean map before the introduction of modern land surveying technologies, Daedongyeojido or The Great Map of the East Land, was produced by Joseon Dynasty cartographer Kim Jeong-ho around 1861.
