Gov't Discusses Revising College Entrance Exam

The Education Ministry has reported to Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon draft revisions to South Korea's university entrance exam.

Lee told an inter-ministerial meeting Thursday the success of a new college admissions system will depend on how acceptable it is to teachers and administrators.

The College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT), or suneung as it is known to Koreans, is the main gateway to college for Korean students, and that one single test result can make or break a student's future prospects.

Supporters of revision want to ease pressure on students by implementing a criterion-referenced evaluation system which would give them a list of academic benchmarks to achieve rather than putting them in competition with each other on a test.

The Education Ministry is aiming to implement a new system in time for the college application year 2021 after going through an extensive public hearing process.
