Endangered Fish Species Spotted off Dokdo

An endangered species of small fish has been observed in waters off South Korea’s Dokdo islet.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said on Sunday that they found the species during a study of marine resources living in and around Dokdo and named it “Dokdo neoclinus okazakii.”

The species is part of the chaenopsid blenny family which is mostly found in the northwest Pacific. Most of the 120 varieties of blenny have been declared as least concern, endangered or critically endangered.

In South Korea, only one variety of blenny was spotted off Jeju Island in 1991 and this particular species has never been seen before.
