Hundreds of Girl Statues Displayed to Remember Wartime Sex Slaves

Hundreds of girl statues representing victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery were displayed at a square in central Seoul on Monday.

The Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan and the Foundation for Justice exhibited 500 girl statues, each as small as the palm of a hand, to commemorate the fifth international memorial day for the wartime sex victims.

The number 500 symbolizes 239 victims registered with the South Korean government, those unregistered as well as the number of estimated victims in North Korea. Names of victims are engraved on each of the figurines.

The exhibition was held for eight hours and 14 minutes until 4:14 p.m.

August 14th, 1991 was when the now deceased human rights activist Kim Hak-sun testified for the first time about her forced sexual slavery during Japan's colonial rule.
