S. Korean Population to Reach Peak in 2031

South Korea's population is forecast to reach its peak in 2031, but the number of households is not expected to hit its peak until 2043.

Statistics Korea released the outlook on Tuesday based on an analysis of census data from 2015.

South Korea's total population is expected to fall after reaching a peak of roughly 53 million in 2031.

Statistics Korea expects the number of households to stand at 20 million in 2020 and increase to about 22 million by 2043.

The average number of household members came to two-point-53 in 2015 but is projected to decrease to two-point-one by 2045.

The statistical agency explained that a fall in the average number of household members to below two means that most households will be one-person families.
