A joint group of researchers from South Korea and the U.S. have developed a cutting edge yarn that generates electricity when stretched or twisted.
 
The Ministry of Science and ICT said Friday that a joint international research team from Hanyang University in Seoul and the University of Texas at Dallas developed the yarn constructed from carbon nanotubes.
 
With a diameter of 60 to 70 micrometers, the yarn is thinner than a human hair.
 
Dubbed "twistron harvesters," the yarn is hoped to help develop smartphones and other devices that will not require batteries.
 
The study was published in the latest edition of the journal, "Science."
