S. Korean Scientists Develop Technology to Detect Bird Flu

South Korean scientists have developed a new technology to detect the avian influenza virus at an early stage and also what strain of the virus it is.

The researchers, led by Seo Min-ah at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology(KIST), said on Thursday that they can perform ultrasensitive biosensing on bird flu using a terahertz(THz) spectroscopy system.

They said their method is particularly efficient as it involves THz nanometamaterial sensing chips which can enhance detection sensitivity.

The result of the research was initially announced through the August 15th edition of prominent journal, Scientific Reports. Researchers at KIST, the University of California at Berkeley, Konkuk University and Korea University also contributed.
