Ground Broken for S. Korean Version of Times Square

The Korea International Trade Association announced on Wednesday that it held a ground-breaking ceremony with Gangnam District for a tourist attraction that will become South Korea’s version of Times Square.

Times Square is a major tourist destination in the Midtown Manhattan section of New York City that houses multiple entertainment centers and shops. Because of its large billboards and ad signs, Times Square is considered to be a nightless spot. The New Year’s Eve countdown celebration held there every year is known for drawing huge crowds.

The trade association will seek to create a similar attraction in areas around the Korea World Trade Center. The agency hopes that the destination, dubbed “World Trade Center K-Pop Square,” will emerge as the media mecca for hallyu, or the Korean wave.

Construction is set to be completed in early December.
