Ex-UN Chief Elected to Head IOC's Ethics Commission

Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been elected the new chair of the ethics commission of the International Olympic Committee(IOC).

The IOC held a session in Lima, Peru on Thursday and approved Ban’s nomination. In June, the IOC nominated Ban to replace Youssoupha Ndiaye.

The commission’s chair has a term of four years and can seek reelection.

The Ethics Commission was established in 1999 as an independent organization under the IOC. It is made up of nine members, including renowned international figures and incumbent IOC members.

The commission is charged with monitoring whether IOC members as well as individuals and organizations related to the Olympics observe IOC ethics and regulations. In the event it finds a violation of regulations, the commission proposes disciplinary action to the IOC Executive Board.

As his first task on the job, Ban is expected to launch a probe on allegations that the vote to award the 2016 Summer Olympic Games to Rio de Janeiro was rigged.
